youth opportunities committee news

The 2008 session of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards got off to a good start on Saturday, 25th July at Grafham Water when over forty young people from across the whole of the East Midlands gathered for a week of team building challenges and pursuits. Apart from outdoor challenges, the week will include business exercises, lectures and practical skills challenges. Amongst the delegates chosen to attend on this occasion was Denise (Dee) Stephens who lives in the Lutterworth area and is a member of staff at the Community Computer Centre at the One Stop Shop in Lutterworth. Good luck Dee.

Members of the Club and guests of Rotary were treated to a superb concert by the Fosse Brass Ensemble at the Broughton Astley Village Hall. Fosse Brass is not a Brass Band in the traditional sense and this was demonstrated very ably with the selection of music played and the high skill levels of the musicians.

The event was organised to raise funds for the international charity, Mercy Ships; an organisation with a fleet of hospital ships and mobile clinical units serving some of the poorest nations on earth, bringing otherwise unavailable skills to these areas. The event generated a sum in excess of £800 for donation to Mercy Ships.

Additionally, the committee recently organised a Race Night at the Kilworth Springs Golf Club which raised a further £1,300 for Rotary supported good causes.
