Expanding the Horizons of Rotary in Broughton Astley

Broughton Astley Rotary is a Rotary Club “in formation” sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wycliffe.

Our aim is to establish a group of like minded people to support good causes mainly in our own community.  We aim to undertake or support projects that will not only benefit the disadvantaged but will also develop young people in our community.

Crocuses in bloomin Broughton Astley.Last September we held a “Nosh & Splosh” (wine and cheese evening) at the Village Hall and, as well as having a good time, we raised £235.

During the Autumn, we liaised with Broughton in Bloom and supplied them with a 1,000 purple crocus bulbs which have been planted in the container on the Main Street side of the Co-Op.  These successfully flowered this Spring.  Why purple?  It’s a bit of a long story, but literally millions of such bulbs were planted around the country to celebrate Rotary’s achievement of virtually eradicating Polio from this world.

At the Broughton Christmas Fayre we ran a Bran Tub with toys for under-10’s and celebrated its success with a convivial Christmas “do” at the George & Dragon a few days later.

At the end of January we held a Race Night which was a sell-out and raised a further £339 for our charitable fund. This enabled us to make a substantial donation Members of Brought Astley Rotary Club (in formation) at the Race Night.to the Robbie Anderson Trust which is a Leicestershire charity aiming to improve facilities for teenage cancer sufferers at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

We have just held a Quiz Evening as a fundraiser for wishes4kids – another local charity to benefit young people.

We plan to play our part in Broughton’s Carnival and have begun preparations for it.

We feel we have made a good start in forming our Rotary Club and are starting to make a difference in our community as well as making new friends.

The only barrier to us becoming a fully-established independent club is the need to recruit further members.  We (that’s Jo, Aiden, Kate, Michelle, Tracey, Tony, Lisa, Melanie, Michelle and Jay) would love to have you come along to one of our meetings.

Currently, we are meeting on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month normally at the Conservative Club in the middle of Broughton Astley.  You can check with Michelle at Needles and Pins on Main Street where we are meeting or just give Roger May a call on 01455 554639.

People who are interested in joining the group should contact Roger May to find out the date, time and venue of the next meeting.
