club's candidate chosen to go on study tour to the phillippines

The Foundation Committee is pleased to advise that a candidate proposed by the Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wycliffe has been selected to go on a Group Study Exchange (GSE) tour. The GSE group of four, together with a Rotarian leader, will visit the Phillippines for four weeks commencing 13th February, 2010, to study aspects of their own professions in an international setting. Our candidate, Dee Stephens, began her association with the Rotary Club of Lutterworth when she was selected to go on the Rotary District 1070 Rotary Young Leaders Award (RYLA) training course at Grafham Water during the summer of 2007 and has since also attended the prestigious International RYLA course with candidates from over 30 countries. Dee has recently made a presentation to the club about what she expects to get from her GSE experience and we wish her all the best of luck in her trip to the Phillipines in 2010.

Contestant at the Young Chef competition, Leicester 2010.

Out of many dozens who took part in the heats, fifteen young people - including two winners from Lutterworth - met recently in Leicester to take part in the regional finals of the Young Chef competition. Although the first prize did not come to Lutterworth, the standards achieved by all the candidates, including ours, was exceptional.

Haitian Earthquake

The Rotary Club of Lutterworth Wycliffe has responded promptly to the Haitian Earthquakes by the funding of a number of ShelterBoxes. These amazing pieces of kit cost just a little over £500 each, but contain sufficient for the survival of ten people including tents, bedding, cooking equipment, water purification chemicals, etc., and are recognised as a significant contribution to relief in emergency situations. To learn more about ShelterBoxes, go to the Shelterbox Website.

Whilst the initial impact of the Haitian earthquake on the lives of the Island people is horrendous, the aftermath is equally devastating. housing, water supplies and basic requirements to survive have all been destroyed, leaving vast numbers of the population in an extremely vulnerable situation.

An immediate response has been made by the two Rotary Clubs in Lutterworth by sending both Aqua Boxes and Shelter Boxes to the disaster area. Moreover, as a result of a fundraising event at their New Year celebrations, the Greyhound Inn in Lutterworth has contributed £1500 to the Rotary Clubs which will be used for the purchase of more Shelter Boxes.

Shelter Boxes enable families of up to 10 people to live together on a temporary basis until more permanent housing can be restored. Each box contains a large tent, sleeping bags, a cooker, water purification tablets and a range of smaller, but essential items to enable a family to survive.

If any of our readers wish to add to the funds which will be used to purchase further Shelter Boxes, donations can be sent to The Treasurer, The Rotary Club of Luttterworth Wycliffe, c/o The Greyhound Coaching Inn, Market Street, Lutterworth, LE17 4UJ.
